With coaches Tyler Graham, Andy Peterson (Oregon State) and David Robb (Mesa, AZ JC) riding outstanding NCAA seasons into the June college championships, the Okotoks Dawgs will be guided in the early going by a couple of coaches in which Dawgs fans are familiar with. Last week, the club announced former Dawgs player and major league pitcher, Jim Henderson (NY Mets, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers) would serve as an assistant coach for the Dawgs' 2017 Opening Weekend. “Little Leaguers" of all ages will want to bring their pens for an autograph from the former Dawgs stand out and current Dawgs Hall of Famer.
Joining Henderson as the club's early season manager will be former Dawgs' skipper, AJ Fystro. Fystro originally joined the Dawgs coaching ranks after a playing and coaching career in the California junior college circuit. He played a vital role in four WMBL Championships with the club, three as the Dawgs’ head coach. AJ and his wife, Sebrina, fell in love with the city of Okotoks and decided to settle here and raise their two sons, Hudson and Ripken, as proud Okotokians.
Rounding out the Dawgs 2017 coaching staff for not only Opening Weekend but the entire season is pitching coach Joe Sergent. Sergent enjoyed an outstanding career as a left-handed pitcher with Lamar University in Texas and professionally in the Florida Marlins organization. The California product was also an All-Star in the independent professional leagues.
