The Okotoks Dawgs came up just short in a back-and-forth contest, falling 8-7 to the Brooks Bombers on Tuesday night. After jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the first, the Dawgs couldn’t fully capitalize on their momentum, allowing Brooks to chip away and eventually take the lead with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Despite the lead-off hitter reaching on an error in the top of the ninth, the Dawgs were unable to mount a final rally and drop a very close game to the Bombers.
Jake Skaggs (Pittsburgh State University) continued to swing a hot bat near the top of the order, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Showcasing his ability to consistently get on base gave the Dawgs some early energy. As well, he extended innings with timely contact throughout the night. Ricardo Sanchez (Pittsburgh State University) also added a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk, showing good discipline and setting the table for the middle of the lineup.
On the mound, Gavin Wuschke (Bellevue University) gave the Dawgs a solid start, tossing 5.0 innings while striking out five and limiting damage to four earned runs on seven hits. From the bullpen, Cade Langford (Southwest Baptist university) was the most effective of the relievers, recording four outs and striking out two while giving up just one run.
The Dawgs now look ahead to their next matchup, tomorrow Wednesday, June 25, right at home, where they will face the Brooks Bombers once again at 7:05. Following, the Dawgs head on the road for a Thursday, June 26 game against the Lethbridge Bulls. For tickets and team info, visit www.dawgsbaseball.ca/tickets or call 403-262-3294.
