Okotoks Dawgs have begun the 2023 season with an eye on capturing back to back WCBL Championships and Dawgs fans have been enjoying the fantastic spring weather in droves with the club currently averaging 4560 fans per game. New features added to the already phenomenal Seaman Stadium have proven to be crowd favorites, including the Dawgs Beach Bar on the Anthem Hospitality Patio, a Volkswagen Van converted into the best drinking hole in the greater Calgary area, the Golden Sombrero Cantina on the Fortis Patio for a bit of Tex-Mex and the iconic Kore 4 (+14) Corner offering the Dawgs faithful the Grog & Grub.
Fun in the stands has been matched by great results on the field. With the roster changing almost on a daily basis as Dawgs players complete their spring college seasons, the club has already shown signs of being strong contenders for another WCBL title.
The Dawgs currently sport an 8-3 record, good for 1st place in the West Division, after turning back the Sylvan Lake Gulls last night in Sylvan by a score of 7-2. The Dawgs were led by a couple of newcomers both from Bellevue University (NEB) and fresh off an appearance at the NAIA World Series. Starting pitcher, Brock Townsend earned the win and has been dominant in striking out 8 batters over 4.2 scoreless innings. In fact, a number of Dawgs pitchers have been outstanding in the early going including Chandler Gilbert CC (AZ) standouts, Daniel Hutchinson, Sam Roberts, and Seth Thompson, all of whom have pitched to a 0.000 ERA. Matching those 0.000’s have been Noah Geekie (Emporia State, KS), Matt Wilkinson (Central Arizona), Brody Forno (Williston State, ND), Gavin Wuschke (OK College) and Brady Wilson (Victoria Collegiate).
Offensive leaders for the Dawgs include the recently arrived Logan Grant, also from Bellevue’s appearance at the NAIA World Series, who in his first game for the Dawgs went 4 for 5 to lead the club over Sylvan Lake. Doing double duty is Noah Geekie who is currently batting .381 with a home run and 6 RBI’s. UBC’s Trent Lenihan leads the club with 12 hits including 3 doubles and is hitting .375. Connor Crowson (Bossier Parish CC, LA), Aiden Rose (UBC) and Cole Cramer (Linn Benton, CC, OR) all sit at .333. Leading the Dawgs in run production in the early going is University of Utah’s Ellijah Hammill who while batting .321 has a team leading 9 RBI’s to go along with a double and a triple.
